The DeKalb County Courthouse, dedicated on June 18, 1914, stands as a stunning example of Ionic Greek architecture, built with Indiana oolitic limestone and accented with Vermont marble. Its crown jewel is the magnificent Florentine glass dome—an architectural treasure tucked within the attic level. By day, sunlight pours in through hidden skylights, and by night, electric lighting brings the dome to life in a warm, ethereal glow.
On the first floor, visitors will find the impressive brass pendulum master clock, which controls the exterior pediment clocks as well as the timepieces in each office and courtroom. Also centered on this floor is the Soldiers’ Monument, bearing plaques honoring every DeKalb County soldier who gave their life in service.
Between the second and third floors, two breathtaking murals—Spirit of Progress and Spirit of Industry—capture the imagination. Each mural measures eighteen feet wide by twelve feet tall, commanding the landing with color, symbolism, and artistry.
Outside the courthouse, an authentic federal cannon stands proudly on the grounds. Shipped from Watertown, Massachusetts, it was dedicated on Memorial Day, March 30, 1909, and remains a prominent historical feature.
