LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORDear Supporters & Friends of GMoA
We are kicking of 2025 with an amazing exhibition opening this Friday, January 10th from 5PM – 8PM. The exhibition is a collection of color photographs created by the now famous street photographer, Vivian Maier.

If you are not familiar with her story, she was a nanny and prolific street photographer who stored her prints and undeveloped film in a storage unit in Chicago. In 2007, at a foreclosure auction in Chicago, the unit was auctioned off and this treasure trove of thousands of negatives, shot by an unknown photographer, was purchased and uncovered by John Maloof. The other buyers of prints and negatives were hunted down and they identified the photographer as Vivian Maier by the name on the processing envelopes. 65% negatives, 30% undeveloped film, and 5% prints were the archived components!
The Garrett Museum of Art previously exhibited 52 pieces of Maier’s black and white photographs and now will exhibit the color works. This exhibition is on loan from Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City, and we are thrilled to bring it to Northeast Indiana. These are rarely shown in the Midwest, so it is an opportunity to see major images of Vivian Maier’s work.  On display in our upstairs gallery will be selections from our Permanent Collection. Our Permanent Collection has increased dramatically in quantity and stature over the past several years, and we are happy to be showing some of the selection, in addition to the original three pieces of artwork by Garrett native, Chet Treesh, donated by Gretel Smith, (Garrett, IN). These three pieces started the Garrett Museum of Art in January 2008!
Please note that due to the stature of the Vivian Maier exhibition, we will have a $5.00 per person entry fee for this show.

As always, we thank you for your support and are looking forward to seeing you on Friday, January 10, 2025 from 5PM – 8PM.
 See you soon!
