Fortify Life Unveils New Transitional Housing to Support Families in Crisis

Fortify Life recently marked a major milestone with the grand opening of expanded transitional living spaces at Fortify Home, a former motel in DeKalb County that has been thoughtfully renovated to serve families experiencing homelessness and financial hardship.

The open house highlighted the completion of 24 living units, including 22 rooms with kitchenettes and private bathrooms, and two family-style apartments. The space also features a new community room, laundry facility, and a children’s playroom, all aimed at helping families begin their journey toward stability.

Fortify Life began its journey five years ago, after an employee of the Sweitzers’ business faced a temporary financial crisis and couldn’t find local help. Since then, Fortify Life has worked to become a bridge for families in their most vulnerable moments, offering what they call time, safety, and support.

Looking ahead, Fortify Life has even bigger plans. The next phase includes:

  • A $2.2 million development for 11 additional apartments, and
  • Fortify Play, a new multi-acre park and splash pad for children and families.

In 2024, Fortify Life served more than 5,000 people, including over 2,000 children — many of them local, working families navigating rural poverty and housing instability.

Pastor Rob Barton of Auburn First United Methodist Church offered a prayer during the event, saying:
