Students building 1924 Duesenberg Tribute Car | #CareerDevelopmentINIndiana

Garrett High School in Garrett, Indiana has a building trades program that gives students practical experience and on-the-job training. Currently, over 150 high school students are participating in a career development program centered on construction, manufacturing, and welding trades at Garrett High School. While these students experience it as a regular day at school, for the educators and administrators guiding the program, it represents a groundbreaking approach that has garnered national attention. This innovative initiative begins as early as fifth grade in the Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District, where students explore construction and manufacturing through specialized academic programs. As they progress through middle and high school, students refine their career interests, shaping their academic curriculum accordingly. The integration of English, math, and science into construction classes, and vice versa, demonstrates a holistic approach to education, with plans to incorporate science and history in the future. By the time they reach their senior year, students are fully equipped for internships or apprenticeships in their chosen trade.

#CareerDevelopmentINIndiana Revs Up with a 1924 Duesenberg Tribute Car with the Garrett High School Trades- Welding and Fabrication program building!

In 2024, we mark a century since a Duesenberg claimed victory at the legendary Indy 500. In commemoration, students enrolled in the trades program are currently honing their craft to construct a tribute car modeled after the 1924 Duesenberg, the victor of that historic race. Guided by local race car builder Gary Babineau, these students are embarking on a journey of craftsmanship and dedication.

In the welding class at Garrett High School, Gary Babineau, a seasoned race car builder, is deep in conversation with one of the students.

The project, based at Garrett High School’s Trades-Welding and Fabrication program, has garnered support from Visit DeKalb and various sponsors. As the endeavor unfolds, we pledge to meticulously document and share its progress, culminating in a grand unveiling at the 2024 Indy 500, where students will showcase their creation to an audience of enthusiasts, spectators, and drivers alike.

Gary Babineau’s mentorship is pivotal, ensuring students navigate each phase of the build with precision and expertise. Beyond crafting a car, this initiative embodies hands-on learning, skill cultivation, and community involvement.

The impact of this endeavor extends far beyond the workshop, fostering career development and empowering our future workforce. By providing authentic experiences and imparting essential job skills, we aim to equip students for success in Indiana’s thriving manufacturing industry, securing meaningful employment opportunities within our local community.

“Career Development IN Indiana” epitomizes the essence of this initiative, aligning seamlessly with our mission to cultivate talent and bolster economic growth. The overwhelming support from local businesses, offering vital matching funds, underscores the collective commitment to nurturing education and industry in our region.

Let us unite in celebration of education, community, and the exhilaration of creating something extraordinary. Stay tuned for further updates as we propel “Career Development IN Indiana” forward with the 1924 Duesenberg Tribute Car!
