We are thrilled to host Christopher Ganz, Professor of drawing and printmaking at Purdue University Fort Wayne, for this exciting workshop!
Participants will create a four-color print (yellow, red, blue, and black) print using linoleum. Each layer (starting with yellow) will be hand printed, and layers will be subsequently printed one on top of the other (from yellow, to red, to blue, and finally black). This process will involve carving material from one piece of linoleum, and a registration system will be used to ensure each color layer aligns to complete an edition of four prints.
Imagery for the print will primarily be abstract, but some representative elements can be used as well, such as natural patterns and textures. Participants can create their own designs prior to the workshop or simply make up the design on the spot. Participants can also collaborate with each other to make prints using more than one linoleum piece.
Participants will learn about the linoleum printmaking process, and about two-dimensional and color design/theory.
An instructive PowerPoint and videos will be shown, along with a safety video and demo.
Note: sharp tools will be used, so participants will need to maintain good safety practices.
No previous experience necessary. Recommended for16 years and up.
The following supplies are included in the workshop registration fee:
-6” x 8” piece of linoleum
-printmaking paper (one large sheet divided in four)
The workshop will provide the following tools and materials for participants to use:
-registration jig
-water soluble ink
-linocut cutting tools
-hand printing tools
-block holder
Workshop fee is $115 payable via the ticket link or message us to pay via check or Venmo. (please note there is a convenience fee for your online purchase)

_________________________
Description of The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell from Kirkus Reviews:
Samuel James Hill is born with ocular albinism, a rare condition that makes his eyes red. Dubbed “the devil boy” by his classmates at Our Lady of Mercy, the Catholic school his mother, Madeline, fights to get him into, he faces loneliness, alienation, and daily ridicule, especially from David Freemon, a merciless bully who keeps finding new ways to torment him, and Sister Beatrice, the school’s principal and Freemon’s enabler, who in her own subtler ways is every bit as vindictive as he is. Only the friendship of two other outsiders, African-American athlete Ernie Cantwell and free-spirited nonconformist Michaela Kennedy, allows him to survive his trying years at OLM. In high school, Sam finds that nearly every routine milestone—the tryouts for the basketball team, the senior prom, the naming of the class valedictorian—represents new challenges. Even Sam’s graduation is blasted by a new crisis, though this one isn’t rooted in his red eyes. Determined to escape from the Bay Area suburb of Burlingame, he finds himself meeting the same problems, often embodied in the very same people, over and over. Yet although he rejects his mother’s unwavering faith in divine providence, he triumphs in the end by recognizing himself in other people and assuming the roles of the friends and mentors who helped bring him to adulthood. Dugoni throws in everything but a pilgrimage to Lourdes, and then adds that trip as well.
Although the author acknowledges in a postscript that his story is perhaps “too episodic,” his life of Sam Hell is inspiring and aglow with the promise of redemption.

History is full of people who keep track of family stories, chronicle day-to-day lives, and record community events. Our county is fortunate to have had many such silent historians, and the Library is excited to host DeKalb County Historian Mary Hollabaugh-Diehl for a special presentation on this topic on Thursday, May 22nd, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the Assembly Room of the Main Library.
Ms. Hollabaugh-Diehl is a lifelong DeKalb County resident with a passion for local history that began in her childhood. As the first female county historian appointed by the Indiana Historical Bureau, she is dedicated to preserving and promoting DeKalb County’s rich heritage. When she’s not delving into the past, Hollabaugh-Diehl brings her dedication to care for her patients as a licensed dental hygienist with over two decades of experience. Outside of work, she cherishes time with her husband of thirty years and their two children. Despite her busy schedule, she is committed to raising awareness about preserving our local history and loves connecting with the community to inspire a shared appreciation for our roots.
DeKalb County’s Silent Historians will focus on lesser known or untold anecdotes relating to monuments, mausoleums, and family stories centered around area cemeteries. One highlight will be Alton Cemetery, which has held a Decoration Day/Memorial Day celebration every year since the Civil War.
This 30-minute presentation will be followed by audience questions.
No registration is necessary, but seating is limited. Please arrive early.
